SY 2024 – 2025 Grading
May 24 – 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
I would first like to personally thank you for your continued support and commitment to RollaDome. As I am aware from feedback in the past, parents and guardians often feel somewhat ‘out of the loop’ in relation to understanding what exactly their child is doing during the sessions and what goals they are working towards. Therefore, I hope that this letter, and all future letters will help to bridge this gap in communication and understanding.
The primary purpose of this letter is to inform you that RollaDome will be holding grading examinations on the 24th May, time (15:00 -17.00). To be confirmed, to be held at Brentside High school, Greenford Ave, Hanwell W7 1JJ (in the Sports Hall) there is free parking on site, I invite all students to sign up!
RollaDome will be offering examinations in both Grades 1 and 2. Whilst all children are welcome to participate in the examinations, your child will only be permitted to participate in the Grade 2 examinations on the premise that they already obtain a Grade 1 Skate Smart Certificate issued by RollaDome! If you are unsure as to whether your child has already received their Grade 1, please email the coach at your skate school, using the emails at the bottom of the email, also ensuring that you state your child’s full name to enable us to check our records.
So what exactly does Grade 1/ Grade 2 entail?
Over the weeks in the sessions as well as having fun they have been working towards their grading, the exact details of what they are doing may not be so clear to you. With this in mind, please see the bullet points below which clearly outline the specific requirements of both Grades 1 and Grade 2 respectively.
Grade 1: Example
- Rise From Kneeling position
- Rise From Sitting position
- Stand and Balance on right/left leg (holding the balance for a required number of seconds)
- Push off skate forwards in a controlled manner (without using the stopper)
- Step over an obstacle whilst rolling (without using the stopper)
- Skate a forward snake pattern using both feet (NO stepping in this pattern, it is a continuous movement)
- Skate Maintenance (each student MUST be able to put on ALL equipment themselves)
Grade 2 Example
- Skate forwards, glide and turn left
- Skate forwards, glide and turn right
- Skate forwards, glide and turn through 180 degrees
- Skate forwards and stop using rear brake (inlines) or toe stop (quads)
- Skate forwards and stop using a T-stop
- Skate forwards, pushing and rolling without the use of rear brake/ toe stop
Please also note that in order to pass Grade 1 and Grade 2, along with a satisfactory performance in the modules, all children must be able to put on all pieces of protective gear (elbow pads, knee pads, wrist guards and helmet) AS WELL AS THEIR SKATES! (So parents when we are shouting at you to ‘let them do it themselves’, this is why!)
On the day of their grading, each student will receive the necessary equipment and will be required to put these on themselves, efficiently and correctly. All students will also be required to pack their equipment and skates away as given to them, a failure to do this on the day of their grading may impact on their final result (so it would be good to practice in the lessons!!). Having said this, assistance may be given to some students, but this will purely be at the discretion of the coaches/ examiner.
FAQ’s about the Grading Day:
How much does it cost for a student to be graded?
The price of grading, inclusive of skate hire and a RollaDome BRSF Graded certificate emailed are as follows:
Grade 1: £10 each
Grade 2: £10 each
Re-grade £6
Payment must be made 7-14 days before grading, no payment will be taken on the day
Is there anything specific my child needs to bring or wear?
- Water bottle/liquid (No glass bottles)
- Comfortable, loose-fitting trousers (jogging bottoms or leggings are perfect) – No Jeans, skirts or dresses are permitted! Students will NOT be able to grade
- Students should go to the toilet before the grading
- Bring or wearing socks
What time should we arrive?
At least 10 minutes before the start of the grading to allow kitting up. If a child is late on the grading day (including the 10 minutes kitting up time), they may not be able to complete their assessment, so please be on time!
What happens if my child does not pass their grading?
If it is the case that your child does not pass their grading, the examiner’s notes will be assessed by the CEO who will make a final judgement. Typically, your child will be re-entered back into the grade that they have been working on, however in some cases a child may be advanced to the next grade and required to complete outstanding modules at a later date. This decision is purely at the discretion of the CEO.
What do we (the parents/ guardians) do during the grading?
Take this opportunity to catch up on some well-deserved rest, instead download our new and active app https://rolladome.teamapp.com , and update your details so you can be kept up to date of all skate club information. If you do want to hang around, we ask that you refrain from entering the hall and peeping through the windows at any time during the grading. If you do remain in the corridor, we ask that you wait quietly and do not stand by the doors as this can be very distracting and noisy to the students. We may have to withdraw the student from the grading if, this happens.
How long does the grading last?
The examination will last for a total of 60minutes. This is not including the 10 minutes at the start of the session delegated for kitting up.
Finally, I thoroughly encourage you to sign your child up for their grading. These grading opportunities allow the children to really see how much they have achieved so far.
If you would like to sign your child up for their grading, please fill out the slip below and return this along with the correct non-refundable payment (preferably in an envelope) to one of the members of admin at the Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Friday classes. Following this, you will receive an email confirming the exact times of your child’s examination.
Results will be issued via email, before September 2022
Once again thank you for all your support so far.
Kind Regards,
Anne-Marie Waugh, CEO
